Car Techs...

Hm, nowadays we heard about clutchless cars, AMT, paddle shift (mind you, it comes from F1), CVT & etc.. but doubt u ever heard of Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).. Well some of you may have heard about it.. Mind you, I myself aint sure what is it right until I read about it..

DSG is actually developed by Volkswagen Group.. It is very different from the rest, say clutchless drive as DSG offer dual clutches... The beauty of this system is that the driver does not operate the clutches, but the engine or computer will operate the clutches.. Its an ingenius idea, whereby 1st clutch is engage, the 2nd clutch is already running (pre-selected) and ready to engage.. For instance, while you are in 2nd gear, the 3rd gear is already running behind somewhere and when it shifts, you dont actually lost any power at all.. In short the transition from 2nd gear to the 3rd is smooth, effortless and pickup is very good (no time lag due to gear shifts)..

Currently, most of the cars we see today still runs on torque converters. Torque converters will cause power-loss & some jerks to a certain degree during gear shifts. This is where DSG comes into the picture, whereby it totally eliminates power-loss, but I am not sure if it does eliminates car jerks ^_^... But I am sure CVT eliminates jerks & offers fuel economy..

We can see that DSG is the way of all future cars, it may even eliminates manual shift sticks (manual gearbox) totally.. Ford, Mitsubishi, Volvo may develop their own DSG systems..
